Wednesday Nights 7pm beginning June 24th 2020
Hello Evergreen friends,
I pray this message finds you centered in Christ during these challenging times of the COVID19 pandemic and racial tensions we are facing. This is certainly a time for deep self-reflection, as we continue on some level of social distancing while confronting social tensions.
We’ve begun gathering again at the Ministry Center with outdoor or indoor options and the availability of watching online later in the evening. It is a step forward, but certainly not what we are accustomed to and all change, even good changes, bring some level of disturbance.
We are the Church and as a community we are being equipped to engage the real world in real time. As much as we would like church to be a heavenly oasis, isolated from the realities of the world, the truth is that we are called by Christ to enter the reality of the world with the power of the Gospel. Therefore, we must face and address what is going on in the larger society around us and how we play a part it. Our desire is to bring the transforming power of the Holy Spirit and the vision of God’s Kingdom into all situations and circumstances.
Therefore, we need to be wide awake to all the social and cultural forces that vie for our attention and allegiance. Our culture is as invisible to us as the air we breathe. Therefore, we need the illumination and challenge of the Holy Spirit and godly voices to drop the scales from our eyes so that we might see as Christ sees and his vision might become our own.
While we look forward to the fulfillment of the heavenly kingdom and reality, we continue to pilgrimage through the fallen world where we find ourselves. We are constantly confronted with two ideals and two storylines. We are ever discerning which of the two is more consistent with the life and teachings of Christ. This is no easy task.
Beginning Wednesday June 24th, we will begin our Wednesday night discussion group. Given the times nd reality we find ourselves, we will be doing a book discussion recommended by the Evangelical Covenant Church based on a title called “White Awake.” The book was written by a pastor in the Chicago area, nearby our denominational headquarters. The books forward was written by Dr. Brenda Salter McNeil, a Covenant leader and pastor whom I have sat under multiple times. I encourage you to purchase the book either in hard copy or digital (kindle version is on sale right now) and read the first three chapters in preparation for our discussion group. You can join us in person or via Zoom. A link will be sent out the week of the discussion. Below you will find a summary of the intent of the book and discussion:
Daniel Hill will never forget the day he heard these words: “Daniel, you may be white, but don’t let that lull you into thinking you have no culture. White culture is very real. In fact, when white culture comes in contact with other cultures, it almost always wins. So it would be a really good idea for you to learn about your culture.” Confused and unsettled by this encounter, Hill began a journey of understanding his own white identity. Today he is an active participant in addressing and confronting racial and systemic injustices. And in this compelling and timely book, he shows you the seven stages to expect on your own path to cultural awakening. It’s crucial to understand both personal and social realities in the areas of race, culture, and identity. This book will give you a new perspective on being white and also empower you to be an agent of reconciliation in our increasingly diverse and divided world.
I look forward to seeing on Wednesday June 24th at 7pm at the church of via Zoom. I m glad to be taking this journey with you and look forward to what we might discover and how we might grow together.

Wednesday Nights 7pm: A 5 Session Study into God’s promise for a new heaven and a new earth.
In this five-session study, John Eldredge explores the revolutionary idea that according to the Bible, heaven is not our eternal home–the new Earth is. Jesus said the next chapter of our story begins with “the renewal of all things” (Matthew 19:28), by which he meant the earth we love, ourselves, and all the things that make for a rich life: music, art, food, and laughter. God’s promise is that everything shall be renewed “when the world is made new.”

- What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries?
- How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money?
